Our care does not
end at the service

The days and weeks after a loss are often the hardest. Lewis & Wright remains available to every family we have served — not just on the day of service, but in the months and years that follow.

Our commitment

Grief is not a problem to be solved. It is a process to be honored. We do not rush it, and we do not leave you to face it alone. Whether you need a listening ear two days after the service or a resource referral two months later, we are here.

Three areas of aftercare

Wherever you are in the process

The Grieving Process

Understanding what is normal in grief can itself be a source of comfort. Every person's journey is different, and there is no timeline you must follow.

  • Understanding the stages of grief
  • Physical symptoms of grief
  • When grief feels complicated
  • Grief during the holidays
  • Anniversary reactions
  • When to seek professional support

Children & Grief

Children grieve differently at every age. Helping a child through loss requires honest, age-appropriate language and a willingness to answer hard questions gently.

  • Talking to toddlers about death
  • School-age children and loss
  • Teenagers and grief
  • Keeping routines after loss
  • Books for grieving children
  • Nashville-area child grief counselors

Practical Resources

Alongside the emotional weight, loss often brings a wave of administrative tasks. We provide guidance on the practical steps that follow a death.

  • Social Security benefits & survivor claims
  • V.A. benefits for surviving families
  • Estate and legal steps
  • Death certificates — how many to order
  • Funeral etiquette for attendees
  • Financial assistance programs

Frequently asked — after a loss

Practical guidance
for what comes next

How many death certificates will we need?
Most families need between 8 and 12 certified copies. You will need one for each financial institution, insurance company, vehicle title, real estate deed, and government agency. Ordering enough upfront saves time and the cost of reordering later. We will guide you through the specific list for your situation.
When should I notify Social Security?
Social Security must be notified promptly of a death. If the deceased received monthly benefits, any payment made for the month of death or after must be returned. We can provide you with the correct contact information and steps to notify Social Security. Surviving spouses and minor children may be eligible for survivor benefits.
How do I access V.A. burial benefits?
Veterans and their spouses may be eligible for burial allowances, national cemetery burial, government headstones, and Presidential Memorial Certificates. Our staff handles V.A. benefits coordination on your behalf — you do not need to navigate the V.A. system alone. We will gather the DD-214 and other required documents.
Is grief counseling available in Nashville?
Yes. We maintain a current referral list of grief counselors, support groups, and faith-based bereavement programs across Middle Tennessee. Please call us or ask at any point and we will connect you with resources suited to your family's needs and faith background.

We remain here
long after the service.

Call us anytime — whether it has been two days or two years. There is never a wrong time to reach out.
